What is Gracious ProfessionalismTM?

Gracious ProfessionalismTM is part of the ethos of FIRST®. The idea and phrase are found throughoutFIRST, but no one has been a stronger champion than FIRST National Advisor, Woodie Flowers. “Gracious Professionalism is a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process.”

Watch a quick video about Gracious Professionalism.  Have one of your own?  Upload it to our YouTube channel!

Foodsafety.gov

Having trouble figuring out where to start your research?  A good place to start – or just use if you’ve already started is foodsafety.gov.  This government run website gives a lot of info on safely preparing, cooking and storing food.  It also has great info on other food related topics, like recalls.

Don’t know what a LEGO Base Kit is??  This is an optional kit of LEGO elements made especially for Jr.FLL teams, it includes everything you need to make your Snack Attack® Model as well as LEGO Serious Play (LSP) mini kits to help facilitate team meetings.  The Base Kit is sold at a special Jr.FLL discount rate through the instructions above.  ** LSP mini kits and other pieces also sold separately at discount rates following the instructions above.

FTC & FRC Teams visit Central Florida Aerospace Academy

Florida continues to develop new teams in new places. Today, Orlando’s Exploding Bacon FRC team, and Odessa, FL FTC team, Team Duct Tape, joined together to show students at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy in Lakeland what they can look forward to in coming weeks, as their own two new FTC and FRC teams take shape.

The school is a prime incubator for great FIRST teams.  The public high school “career academy” is located on the SUN ’n FUN and Florida Air Museum campus at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport – how cool is that?! -  and we’re looking forward to seeing CFAA students at events in coming weeks.  Kudos to Exploding Bacon and Team Duct Tape for some great outreach!

Jr. FLL Bulletin -Brain Buster,Focus-Focus-Focus, What is LSP, FIRST Spotlight

Welcome to the Jr.FLL Bulletin!

Thank you for your time and effort coaching a Jr.FLL® team! We hope to keep this update as short and useful as possible. In every issue you will find a new Trivia Question or Brain teaser that you can use in your team meetings, a tip for coaching your Jr.FLL® team, an update on what’s happening around here at FIRST® and more!

Brain Buster What are the six core values of the Junior FIRST® LEGO® League?

  1. We are a team.
  2. We do the work. Our coaches and mentors help us learn, but we find the answers ourselves.
  3. We share our experiences and discoveries with others.
  4. We are helpful, kind, and show respect when we work, play and share. We call this Gracious Professionalism™.
  5. We are all winners.
  6. We have fun.

Focus-Focus-Focus Having trouble getting the kids to focus? Try LSP! Check out the LSP activities here (at the bottom of page 3). They are specifically designed to get kids to see the LEGO® bricks as a tool rather than just a toy. The LSP 8 Pack & LSP Special Activities guide can be purchased from LEGO Education through the link on your registration page. àWhat is LSP? LSP – LEGO Serious Play is a way to enhance team-building and communication skills. It consists of mini-kits containing 51 LEGO pieces and a guide with LSP activities and examples how you can use the LSP pieces to explore challenge theme topics. If you already have a base kit from previous years (or your own pieces to use) you can purchase the LSP 8 Pack & LSP Special activities from the link on your registration page (if you purchased a base kit this year the LSP activities are included).

FIRST Spotlight Were you able to watch the special i.am FIRST® – Science is Rock and Roll on ABC a few weeks ago? If not check it out http://iam-fan.com/?p=1449. Things are movin’ and grovin’ around here. With registration in full swing we are excited to see how many teams are joining us this year! We can’t wait to see the models and posters that the kids come up with. Want to share what your team is working on so far? Post a video to our YouTube channel!
