FLL Update: Global Innovation/Reviews for FIRST

Any currently registered FLL team may now enter their SENIOR SOLUTIONS Project invention for a chance to win $20,000 in the Global Innovation Award competition. Visit the website at http://fllinnovation.firstlegoleague.org. Since opening day 31 teams have submitted their FLL Project solutions – inventions range from devices that combat memory loss to fire prevention sensors. Voting opens February 11th, so submit your team’s idea soon!

Read all the details in the FAQ section on http://fllinnovation.firstlegoleague.org. Please read all submission criteria carefully and do not post photos of children under the age of 18.  Prize money may be used to further develop the team’s invention and/or support team activities related to FIRST programs.

FLL Global Innovation Submissions Open January 17th!

FLL is pleased to announce the opening of submissions for the FLL Global Innovation Award. Teams can begin the submission process January 17, 2013 at 12pm ET on http://fllinnovation.firstlegoleague.org. An updated FAQ will be available on the site at that time. Please note that online voting will begin on February 11th in order to give all teams time to post their submissions on the site. Both submission entry and voting will officially end on March 1, 2013 at 12pm ET. More details on voting will be forthcoming.

FLL Update: Global Innovation Kick Off, New LEGO Platform – EV3 and more!

We are days away from launching the 3rd season of the FIRST® LEGO® League Global Innovation Award! We want to take a moment to refocus the FLL community on one of the core concepts of FIRST LEGO League. Lately, we have noticed some community members, albeit well-intentioned community members, post solutions for the current seasons’ Robot Game and robot design via social media. While sharing is an important part of FLL, we strongly urge all who post this information to take a close look at what they are posting. The goal of sharing is to inspire others and to let them experience and celebrate their own learning process. We encourage all teams to share tips on the FLL Challenge and respectfully request that solutions be discovered on an individual basis. We also encourage teams who find inspiration from the FLL community to use that inspiration to develop their own innovative solutions to solve Robot Game missions. Thank you.

Have an amazing and innovative FLL Project? Want to help your team win the opportunity to develop their idea further? Coming August 2013, Nature’s Fury asks FLL teams to “master natural disasters” through exploration of storms, quakes, waves, and more. FLL Update: Coach Calls, IMPORTANT Updates – Robot Game, Registration & Forums

–>Coach Calls – “Robot Game” Call TOMORROW

On Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at 7pm ET on the “Robot Game” call, get an explanation of the field and missions from FLL Robot Game designer, Scott Evans. What are the new/ changed rules for the season? This call is scheduled to run two (2) hours in length.

Each call can hold 1000 participants, so make sure to join on time. There will be a Q&A after the speakers are done, so come prepared with questions.

 –>What are Over 80,000 Kids doing this Fall (US/CAN)? 

As of today, over 10,200 FLL teams in the US/CAN are registered for the SENIOR SOLUTIONS(SM) season. Assuming an average of 8 children per team, that’s over 80,000 children!

FLL Update: Engineering Update/ Team Size & Event Participation, GeekMom Podcast ,Field Setup Kit Packaging & More!

Game Design Division, 1st floor, (okay – it’s Scott’s desk)…  As of last week, the SENIOR SOLUTIONS(SM) Robot Game is finalized and the 2013 design is in full swing!

 –>Team Size & Event Participation

Friendly reminders…

ALL TEAMS – Teams may include up to ten (10) children.  This means that only ten (10) children may work on the robot or Project, and only those same ten (10) children may attend an official FLL event.

US/CAN TEAMS – Teams must pay their national registration fee before they will be allowed to register for or participate in official FLL tournaments.

Jr.FLL is seeing incredible growth and we are not just talking about how many teams and in how many countries. Jr.FLL is going to be unveiling a brand new online Expo – a virtual event, gallery, and community all rolled into one. Teams will still be able to benefit from discounted Jr.FLL Base Kits and now, they will have a place to show off their models, talk about their research and interact with other registered teams around the world. Jr.FLL is a great mentoring opportunity for your FLL team.  Not only can you help open their eyes to the world of STEM but you can encourage them to go on to FLL in future seasons!  SUPER SENIORS registration opens August 1, 2012.

Starting with the SENIOR SOLUTIONS season, the Field Setup Kits are being packaged in a single square box. This packaging is different from past years which had either a single long box or multiple boxes.  The SENIOR SOLUTIONS mat is folded and placed in the square box along with the mission model elements and dual lock.

Last years’ FLL Global Innovation Award winner, The Flying Monkeys, represented the U.S. at Earth Summit 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As part of a panel that showcased sceicntific innovations of young people, they presented their award-winning device the BOB-1, which gives people with missing digits full use of their hands.
