Congrats Orlando Regional Logo Contest Winner!

The Orlando Regional is  proud to announce the winner of the Orlando Regional Logo Contest,  Nathaniel Walters from 15th FINAL4-H Exploding Bacon Robotics, Team #1902.

In submitting his entry, Nathaniel wrote “The Florida circuit board was basically an idea I had since the logo contest was first mentioned Nathaniel Waltersto me by one of our mentors. The circuit board was simply all these wires going to Orlando from all around the world. The reason for the Florida circuit board was that I would draw circuit boards when I was in long car trips.”

The  Regional Planning Committee hosted the contest to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of the Orlando Regional, a signature event in the history of FIRST in Florida!

Nathaniel and his entry will be recognized at the March 2013 competition and in the Regional Program Book, and the logo will be used on 15th Anniversary t-shirts that will be available for pre-order, and delivered at the competition, and may be used on other items in honor of the Anniversary.

Congratulations, Nathaniel!

FRC Student Meets Bill Clinton at Masie Learning 2011!

Meeting former President Bill Clinton

One extra perk from last week’s Masie Learning conference was the opportunity for an FRC student to meet with former President Bill Clinton. The honor went to  FRC Exploding Bacon team member, Katie Austin, who got to spend a little time with President Clinton, and with FIRST founder Dean Kamen.   More icing on the cake that is FRC!

Learning Gives Back to FIRST at Elliott Masie’s Learning 2011!

The MASIE  Center presented FIRST founder, Dean Kamen, and FIRST president Jon Dudas with  a Learning Gives Back Grant for $25,000 , and named FIRST Vice chairman  John Abele the 2011 receipient of the Lifetime Learning Leadership Award, at Elliott Masie’s Learning 2011 conference in Orlando this week.

Three Florida FIRST teams were on hand to meet with all these great luminaries, and for Learning 2011 conference attendees to meet a few of the great young minds behind our great STEM program.  Students from FLL Team Party Boss of Orlando; FTC Team Duct Tape from Odessa,  and FRC Team Exploding Bacon, from Orlando enjoyed some one on one with Dean Kamen, on stage time together with Dean Kamen, Jon Dudas, and Elliott Masie, and the opportunity to share FIRST with event goers.

It was a great time all the way around, and a terrific opportunity to bring FIRST to more people, at an exciting and innovative learning conference.

FTC & FRC Teams visit Central Florida Aerospace Academy

Florida continues to develop new teams in new places. Today, Orlando’s Exploding Bacon FRC team, and Odessa, FL FTC team, Team Duct Tape, joined together to show students at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy in Lakeland what they can look forward to in coming weeks, as their own two new FTC and FRC teams take shape.

The school is a prime incubator for great FIRST teams.  The public high school “career academy” is located on the SUN ’n FUN and Florida Air Museum campus at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport – how cool is that?! -  and we’re looking forward to seeing CFAA students at events in coming weeks.  Kudos to Exploding Bacon and Team Duct Tape for some great outreach!

Tempest ‘n’ Tampa a Perfect Storm of Robotics!

The 2011 Tempest ‘n’ Tampa off-season event was a perfect storm of robotics, with FRC team rolling in from Miami, Daytona, Orlando and other parts north and south!  The stands were packed, the FTC and FLL workshops were full, and the new season camaraderie was in full swing.  Logo Motion raged on the field with all the vigor of the past season, and all the usual antics, including Umbrella Guy on (and off!) jumping stilts .

FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST LEGO League teams attending the event had the opportunity to enjoy some useful workshops on everything from team marketing to first competition experiences to using sensors and good mechanical design.

Teams had a great time catching up with old friends and making some new ones. And visitors had a ring side seat to all levels of FIRST, and opportunities to talk to students and teams in FRC, FTC and FLL.

It’s great to see Tempest ‘n’ Tampa back in town, offering an off season opportunity to gear up for the new season!
